Highly popular, most people are drawn to the exchange of messages as it allows both parties to test the waters and save face whatever their dating intentions. It’s also fun and easy. But don’t let the simplicity of the medium ease you into thinking ’anything goes’. When it comes to proper text flirting, a solid knowledge of the rules of the game is a must.

1. DO encourage your dating prospect to text you when you give out your number. People are generally more comfortable with the idea of text flirting first, and calling later, to rightfully gauge
compatibility. Your guy or girl will be more likely to initiate contact and respond to your missives if he or she knows you’re up for casual communication at first rather than all-out dating.
2. DON’T just text ‘hi’. Don’t squander your chance of communication with this, the most generic of introductions. Brief and shy texting never works. Write something light and humorous instead. Aim to make your guy or girl smile. You want your potential sweetheart to write back to you, right?
3. DO reply within 24 hours. If you’re interested, reply within a reasonable timeframe. If not, take your time. Text message timing is a major clue-in factor for both parties as to the genuine level of interest in a potential relationship. Use it wisely.
4. DON’T text under the influence. Text messaging while tipsy is never a good idea. Text sober or not at all if you don’t want to regret the things you texted the morning after a big night out.
5. DO learn how to signal ’Just Friends’. Inserting words such as ‘mate’, ’chum’, ’pal’ or ‘buddy’ into your messages is a clever way to go about letting them know you are just interested in being friends. The guy or girl in question will take the hint and be glad you were upfront about your intentions from the start.
